A Couple Planning an Amsterdam Evening From Home

When two people book one evening together, the planning has a few extra lines: which row of the rate table applies, what both must know, and who writes.

Couples who arrange an evening in Amsterdam before the trip tend to be careful planners. They have usually talked it over at length, often chosen from the profiles together, and they write with more questions than a single guest. The questions are good ones, and nearly all of them have short answers.

Which row applies

A couple can book one therapist or two, and the choice decides the figure. A couple sharing one therapist is charged at EUR 360 an hour: EUR 540 for ninety minutes, EUR 720 for two hours, EUR 1,080 for three, and EUR 2,500 for the eight hour overnight. A couple with a therapist each is charged at EUR 720 an hour: EUR 1,080 for ninety minutes, EUR 1,440 for two hours, EUR 2,160 for three, and EUR 5,760 for an overnight. Each row is printed on every profile on the roster, and the couples page explains the two formats.

Because the booking is made from home, half of the figure goes ahead, and a booking with two therapists carries half ahead whatever the lead time. Two hours with a therapist each is therefore confirmed with EUR 720, and the other EUR 720 is paid on arrival.

One thread, one voice

A couple should choose one of the two to write the messages and keep to it. Two people writing in the same thread, or worse in two threads, produces two slightly different versions of the booking, and the house has to ask which one is meant. The person writing is also the person whose name the booking is made in and whose phone should be on when the evening arrives.

That does not mean the other guest is left out of the decisions. It means the decisions are made between the two of you before the message is sent, and the thread receives one clear version.

Both guests, twenty-one or over

Everyone present must be twenty-one or over, and that includes both halves of a couple. Sending the booking message states that this is true of everyone who will be in the room. She may ask either guest for a photo document at the door, and she looks at it and hands it back without copying anything. If she cannot satisfy herself on the point, she leaves before anything starts. The person writing the messages should make sure the other guest knows this before the trip.

Naming one woman, or two

With one therapist, a couple names one woman, and it helps to name a second as a fallback in case the first is not free on that evening. With two therapists, name both, and say whether the booking should still go ahead as a one-therapist booking if only one of them is free. The reply says who is free on that date and at that hour, and the choice returns to you.

What neither of you can settle in the thread is what the session includes. That is decided by her, or by each of them with two therapists, in the room. Each therapist states her own limits at the start, and they hold for the whole visit.

The room

A couple needs a room with space for three or four people, which is a quieter consideration than it sounds when booking a hotel months ahead. A compact double in an old canal house may have a bed filling the room and a bathroom the size of a wardrobe. Travellers booking a hotel with an evening like this in mind often choose a larger room or a small suite, and it is worth doing at the same time as the evening itself rather than discovering the problem on arrival.

Changes, for two

A couple's trip is twice as likely to move, because it depends on two diaries. The one-move rule covers a change of date in exactly the same way as for a single guest: once, asked more than twenty-four hours ahead, to a date within fourteen days, with the deposit carried across. A change from two therapists to one, or from one to two, is a change to the booking on the same evening and changes the deposit accordingly. A change of heart by one of the two is a cancellation like any other, read on the notice scale in the booking terms.

On the evening

The person who wrote the messages sends the room number after check-in. She sends word when she sets out, or each of them does when there are two. The balance for the whole booking is paid on arrival, in one amount. Couples who booked from home often say that the planning turned out to be the longer part and the evening the easier one, which is roughly how it should be.
